Is My Cat Overweight? A Hands-On Check

· By

Feel your cat's ribs and spine: they should be easy to feel under a slight fat layer. From above, look for a modest waist behind the ribs. A small belly pouch is normal, but ribs you cannot feel, no waist, and a rounded, sagging abdomen mean your cat is overweight.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

Use the same three checks vets use, adapted for cats. Cornell's Feline Health Center describes assessing body condition three ways: palpate the ribs, view the cat from the side, and view from above (Cornell Feline Health Center).

  • Ribs. Run your hands along the sides. You should feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat. If they're buried, that's excess fat.
  • From above. Look down at your standing cat. There should be a slight waist behind the ribs. Straight or bulging sides mean overweight.
  • From the side. The belly should be relatively tucked. A rounded, pendulous abdomen (beyond the normal primordial pouch) signals fat.

On the nine-point scale, ideal is 4.5 to 5, cats above 6.5 to 7 are overweight, and 8 or 9 is obese (Cornell Feline Health Center). Formally, obesity is body weight 20% or more above ideal.

How common is this — is my cat really overweight?

Very likely more owners than expect it. In 2022, 61% of U.S. cats were overweight or obese (APOP 2022), and across studies feline overweight prevalence runs anywhere from 11.5% to 63% (feline obesity review, PMC). An overweight cat looks normal because most cats now are.

8–9/9Cannot feelRounded, no waistObese (≥20% over)

Why does it matter?

Because feline fat drives disease. Obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes mellitus in cats, and obese cats are almost twice as likely to show signs of joint disease as lean cats (feline obesity review, PMC). A few extra ounces on a 10-pound animal is proportionally a lot.

What should I do next?

If your cat fails the checks, don't crash-diet — cats need slow, careful weight loss. Frequently asked questions

Is a saggy belly on my cat a sign of fat?

Not always. Many cats have a primordial pouch, a normal flap of skin low on the belly that swings when they walk. Judge weight by the ribs and waist, not the pouch alone.

What is a healthy weight for my cat?

It depends on frame, not breed averages. Aim for a body condition of 5 out of 9, ribs easily felt with a visible waist, rather than a single target number.

PawAI is built for dogs. The feline side exists under the hood (energy, body condition, toxic foods), but the growth plan and the training program come from canine guidance, and serving those for a cat would sell you as protocol something that isn't one for their species.
