Ideal Weight for a Chihuahua: Chart by Sex and Age

A healthy Chihuahua weighs no more than 6 lb, usually 3-6 lb. On the smallest of all breeds even a few extra ounces count, so track weight closely and check for ribs and a waist by hand.

Why the number matters less than body condition

A weight chart is a starting range, not a verdict. Two healthy Chihuahuas can sit pounds apart depending on frame and height, so the reliable test is body condition: can you feel the ribs with a light press, and is there a waist when you look down from above?

The Chihuahua standard caps the breed at six pounds and disqualifies any dog over that, with most healthy adults between about three and six. As the smallest recognized breed, its ideal margin is measured in ounces, and a proud, barrel-sprung ribcage can be mistaken for either fat or leanness. Feel along the sides rather than eyeballing the outline to place a Chihuahua correctly.

Weight-related health risks in the Chihuahua

Chihuahuas carry a significant predisposition to medial patellar luxation, and their fine legs tolerate extra weight poorly. The breed is also associated with congenital hydrocephalus, a molera or open fontanelle on the skull, and a mild predisposition to heart disease; obesity adds cardiac and respiratory strain a tiny body cannot easily absorb. Dental crowding is common, though periodontal disease rates in the breed are comparatively low.
