Ideal Weight for a English Bulldog: Chart by Sex and Age
A healthy English Bulldog weighs about 50 lb (male) or 40 lb (female) per the AKC standard. Because the breed is naturally broad and heavy-boned, feel for the ribs and waist rather than judging by its bulky outline.
English Bulldog ideal weight by sex
| Sex | Ideal weight (lb) | Ideal weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Female | 38-42 lb | 17.2-19.1 kg |
| Male | 48-52 lb | 21.8-23.6 kg |
Size class: medium. Weight-gain risk for this breed: High.
Why the number matters less than body condition
A weight chart is a starting range, not a verdict. Two healthy English Bulldogs can sit pounds apart depending on frame and height, so the reliable test is body condition: can you feel the ribs with a light press, and is there a waist when you look down from above?
The Bulldog standard is unusually plain about size, asking for about 50 lb in mature males and 40 lb in mature females, with no height figure at all. The low-slung, wide-fronted build already looks heavy, which makes real fat easy to miss. A correct Bulldog is thickset but should still have a perceptible waist and ribs you can find under the loose skin and dewlap.

Check my dog's body condition →Weight-related health risks in the English Bulldog
English Bulldogs carry more than twice the odds of at least one health disorder compared with other dogs, and obesity magnifies almost all of them. Skin-fold dermatitis, the breed's most over-represented condition, worsens as folds deepen with weight, and brachycephalic airway disease leaves little breathing reserve for a heavy body. Extra load also strains hips and the wheel-backed spine, while heat intolerance turns dangerous fast in an overweight, flat-faced dog.
Rough daily calories across the English Bulldog's ideal range
| Body weight | Maintenance (kcal/day) | Weight-loss target (kcal/day) |
|---|---|---|
| 38 lb (17.2 kg) | 947 kcal | 474 kcal |
| 45 lb (20.4 kg) | 1076 kcal | 538 kcal |
| 52 lb (23.6 kg) | 1199 kcal | 599 kcal |
Orientative only, for a spayed/neutered adult, using resting energy (RER = 70 × kg^0.75) and AAHA/WSAVA maintenance factors; weight loss follows the AAHA rule of 0.80 × RER of the target weight. For your dog's number, use the dog calorie calculator and see the full methodology. Confirm any weight-loss plan with your veterinarian.
